a couple weeks ago on a night in which my sobriety is questionable i saw a caterpillar on the ground and decided to take him in and raise him as my own in a little habitat i expertly crafted for max bug comfort

(not a scientifically accurate depiction of the caterpillar but not 2 far off)

ive had experience with bug keepin when i was a child so i thought i had it pretty down pat but then one day it kinda looked like he had shriveled up and uh, passed on

i figured id let him .. rest … over thanksgiving break, and i’d deal with it when i got home. but a week later upon my return i found a more shocking revelation: right next to what appeared to be my Late Friend there was now an orange thing

so i kinda thought maybe he like… hadn’t really died, got to work making his Sleeping Bag, and then uh .. died for real? but like, next to his sleeping bag instead of in it? i was very confused

and then the .. french pastry , previously assumed to be an empty shell, got even more mysterious when it. turned and looked at me

i dont know where it came from, or what came of the caterpillars body, but i thought it might have been a trick of my eyes until my roommate made the same discovery and got the same terrifying death stare from the breadstick

so right now i am very distraught and confused and everything i thought i knew about bugs was a lie. i decided to give our new fat orange chode a little shut-eye by blanketing his bug home in some toilet paper for now.

but uh can anyone like. explain this shit to me. what am i dealin with and what is it gonna do after this. i cant let him outside because he will freeze and die. but i cant look at him until i know where he came from and what he did to my caterpillar. thank u

A caterpillar actually molts into the pupal stage! The withered black husk is the caterpillar’s last discarded “skin,” and the chrysalis stage will actually be able to move a little bit for quite some time! They typically just twitch a little when they feel disturbed or jostled, which can startle a nosey predator. There are a few insects whose pupa/cocoon can even move around a little, pushing itself through its old larval tunnels, or vibrate loudly like a cell phone when pissed off enough. Mosquitoes have pupa that can swim!

i spent 13 years at school learning how to argue a point and maximise my wordcount and now i gotta write an artist statement

also there arent really rules for writing an artist statement. like does it have to be in third or first person? do u use super formal language or not do that? there are no rules
