I love how, because of that “Beautiful Cinnamon Roll Too Good For This World, Too Pure” Onion headline, “cinnamon roll” has become a commonly accepted phrase for “a character who is cute and kind and typically gets more pain in canon than they deserve”.
Like, we didn’t have a real phrase for that common phenomenon (wubbie maybe, but that has negative connotations ie “this character has been wubbiefied by the fandom”) and then someone used a screenshot of a headline from a satire news website to describe it, and then everyone else was like “yes good let’s use this”. You couldn’t make that shit up. I bet there are people who use that phrase now who didn’t even see that headline.
Language is evolving right before our eyes in a very weird and beautiful way and I am very very sorry for future linguist who have to puzzle this shit out.
idfk they got rid of all the filters and mods or something, sat back, and trusted the community way too much
heres an unedited, non-cherrypicked screenshot of one of the boards
and for anyone who was never really familiar with how neopets censoring worked, it goes way beyond not being able to curse
you couldn’t say pretty much anything
you couldnt say something like “i fell down a hole” because the censors would catch you saying “a hole”
recently the censors were so bad you couldnt say cucumber, basement, grape, weed (outside the context of drugs) and many other words. because they have bad words in them. which was beginning to become a problem because some items on the website itself would have these words in them and you couldn’t mention them on the boards (like, if you were trying to buy/sell them or something)
you couldn’t discuss politics in any shape or form. that means saying the word “obama”
you couldn’t discuss things like sexuality or dating or any references to dating
or parties
you couldn’t mention websites outside of neo in any shape or form Not even reference websites if you wanted to tell your friend to look up something on youtube or to check their tumblr or something, you had to get really creative with your codenames for the websites. if neo caught on to those codenames, you’d get banned anyway
so….. basically, sending a message is like playing a game of “will i get banned for this?” and sometimes you’re banned anyway because the censors were so bad you would never know what you said that was “wrong”
i guess now i have what ive been wanting for years (i would still have some censors in place, not complete unregulated chaos)
BUT it came so suddenly that the whole thing is an absolute trainwreck with everyone taking advantage of it and its the most hilarious thing
the censors will probably be back up soon once jumpstart realizes they fucked up
