As a society, we view accommodations in a really illogical, detrimental way. No one really says it out right, but there seems to be this weird unwritten rule that disabled people only need/deserve accommodations if they absolutely cannot complete a task without them.

In reality, disability is much more complex than “can” vs. “can’t.” Some disabled people can manage certain things only on a good day. Some might be able to manage a task, but will suffer unnecessarily (emotional reactions, pain, fatigue, etc) when a non-disabled person would not.

The thing about that is…all people have needs, but society is built to satisfy only one set of needs (the needs of non-disabled people). That’s the whole reason accommodations are important, because disabled people deserve to have their needs met just as much non-disabled people.
